Home Grown

by Peachy Palate on October 24, 2012

There really is nothing better than growing your own fruit and vegetables. Nothing tastes better, partially due to the love that’s gone in to growing them and largely owing to their natural pesticide free development!

Spooky Snacks and Healthy Halloween Treats

I wish I could provide you with an array of delicious recipes utilising my own home grown ingredients but my lack of garden prevents me growing anything other than a few herbs (tomatoes have been attempted with no great success thus far!). However…I do have little baking treat, whipped up using some local Bramley apples given to me by my Granny!

Before I get to food…in case you missed my nutrition post over the weekend…check it out, I’d love to hear your comments – “Plants have protein too you know!”

Before I get to that though, whipped oats have been on the agenda more than usual lately. They never fail to warm me up of a chilly morning and we’ve been having a fair few of them over the past few days.

I’ve been playing around with mix ins and the liquid to oat ratio and these are by far the most delicious bowl I’ve had yet (though the fig and pear creation on Monday was quite the treat!)

Blueberry and Banana Vanilla whipped oats with cashew nut butter! Seriously in love with cashew nut butter, between it and SunButter, almond has been taking a back seat! I’ll have my recipe up tomorrow morning.

Then came a delicious pumpkin chili spelt pasta with a nutty crumble topping!

It has roast pumpkin in it…need I say anymore!!! I’ll stick the recipe up for this one tomorrow evening.

I went with soup at lunch…packed full of carrot and ginger. Soothing on the tummy and incredibly comforting.

Another double portion that ended up getting eat in one sitting! Served up with a slice of homemade soda bread. The recipes for both will be up on Friday evening.

Before I get to the soup though I’ll be sharing my latest baking experiment which turned out to be quite the success!

Making use of those Bramley apples I made a batch of apple quinoa cinnamon and maple pecan squares! Quite the mouthful!

Soft, spongy, sweet, and packed full of the nutty deliciousness that are quinoa flakes!!!

I’ll have the recipe up for these first thing Friday morning!

Between the oats and the apple squares, I’d be hard pressed to pick a favourite!

Happy What I Ate Wednesday folks!

I love growing my own veggies. I only have a balcony as outdoor space so I just grew loads of different types of lettuces and herbs this summer, but I will try and be more adventurous next year! I always come back from my parents with loads of produce, my dad grows tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuces, onions, radishes, beets, carrots, broccoli, gooseberries, rhubarb, and the list goes on!

good for you for starting a garden! I’ve never attempted it, but my parents grow tomatoes in Texas every summer, and they are out of this world AMAZING!

Haha. My granny gives me tons of apples too! I think so far this year she has already given my family four big bags of gold delicious… So good!

Many many tempting recipes today :) I haven’t tried cubed pumpkin on anything, just pumpkin puree. That would be great to try just roasted. Looking forward to that soup and bread recipe. Look perfect for a cool fall day!
