Fruit Free Green Monster Protein Smoothie

A thick silky smooth fruit free green monster smoothie that doesn’t separate! My go to snack any time of the day…once it’s a sunny one, or I can at least hide away in a warm place!

When I followed a vegan diet fruit filled smoothies were pretty much an every day staple. At least 4 days out of the week I started the day with a MASSIVE fruit based smoothie, the bigger the better in my eyes. The alternative was an equally HUGE box of fruit, we’re talking 5-6 pieces of fruit, smothered with soya yogurt.

It was a recipe for disaster, a sure fire way to set me up for the day in the worst way possible. Fruit was a massive safety net for me, I could eat it in volumes without any guilt.

The downside was of course the stomach cramps, bloating, extreme sugar spikes and waking up in what I can only describe as a sugar coma. A similar feeling to being hungover having had one too many glasses of wine!

So…this smoothie is a far cry from my those from what now feels like a former life! No fruit (ok so avocado is technically a fruit but I don’t put it in the same category nutritionally) less than half the volume, added paleo protein, served straight up in a glass, because it’s truly so satisfying it requires nothing more! Plain, simple and super green; it stands quite beautifully in a brand spanking new glass I picked up a couple of weeks ago in Avoca Kilmac.

Having a NutriBullet on hand makes an incredible difference, whipping up a smoothie is totally hassle free, cleaning up is effortless and the final consistency is SO much better!!! The avocado and spinach blend together with the almond milk to create the creamiest silky smoothie green monster concoction I’ve ever had the pleasure of slurping!

Fruit Free Green Monster Protein Smoothie

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients (Serves 1)

  • 2 large handfuls of organic baby spinach
  • 1 cup (250ml) unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 scoop (25g) paleo protein powder; my favourite is the berry blast!
  • 1/2 a LARGE avocado…or 1 full small avocado; approx. 100g/3.5 oz
  • Optional: 1 tbsp powdered , 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract, dash or two of cinnamon…a few fresh mint leaves!


Blend all ingredients together in a high speed blender or NutriBullet.

Sweeten to taste and blend in optional extras! Will keep in the fridge for a good 24 hours if you decide to hold on to some or all of it for later!

  1. you only get a ‘sugar hangover’ feeling when you combine fruit and fat! its not good food combining to combine soya yogurt and fruit (causes bloating) and it raises your blood sugar because the natural sugar cannot get in and out of your cells! (the fat blocks it).
    look up 801010 and fruit combining! it may help you 🙂

    1. Thanks Celina! The soya yogurt was fat free so that definitely wasn’t the issue but thanks for the tip anyway. I actually wouldn’t eat fruit on it’s own because it raises your blood sugar so much, the only exception being a banana post workout to restore my glycogen.

    1. Hi Steph! You could input into my fitness pal or an online calorie/nutriitonal calculator. I’d guesstimate less than 20g of carbs. There’s about 9g in 100g of avocado so it’s probably close enough to 15 in total!
